Board Recruitment and Development

At the Excelsior Bay Group, we take a “lifecycle” approach to our work with boards of directors.  We believe that non-profit organizations move through a series of developmental stages, and that each is characterized by a specific set of challenges that must be mastered before progressing to the next stage in maturity or returning to growth from a state of decline.

We also believe that non-profit organizations belong to the communities they serve.  As a result, the role of the board of directors is to a) represent and protect the public’s interest, and b) enable to the organization to effectively achieve its mission.  To fulfill this role, a board has both formal (governance) and informal (supporting) responsibilities.  The formal responsibilities are the same across organizations – delegation of management authority, ensuring accountability and compliance, establishing strategic direction, etc.  The informal responsibilities, however, change, and can change dramatically depending upon the developmental stage of the organization – fundraising, community relations, business planning, financial planning and analysis, marketing, etc.

As a result, our board services are designed to help clients 1) diagnose their organizational life stage, 2) identify and prioritize the challenges they are facing in this stage, and 3) clearly define the assistance and support needed from their boards in order to address these challenges. This approach has allowed us to add meaningful value and direction to our clients regardless of the stage in which an organization finds itself.  Specific services include:

  • Board member recruitment and orientation
  • Board training (both individual and group)
  • Board planning retreats
  • Board assessment
